Choosing Men’s Suits Color

Most men choose a suit’s color based off of two factors. 1) The dark suits salesman says the color looks good and 2) it looks like a suit he has purchased in the past. The problem here is that most men do not know what colors compliment their complexion and instead of choosing a color that enhances their looks, they choose a color that simply fits in. The result is a closet full of suits made from the wrong fabric.

The purpose of this article is to open your eyes to light grey suits the world of men’s suit colors and encourage you to choose a fabric that compliments your individual style.

The Triad: Navy Blue, Black and Charcoal Gray

These three colors dominate the men’s suit industry, and for good reason. Most men are complimented by one or more of these dark colors. Dark suits have the ability to seamlessly transition from business to pleasure, in addition to a slimming effect of the silhouette. Let us talk about each color quickly

Navy Blue

Navy blues strength lies in its sheer dominance. Most men own at least one, and if you have ever walked into a business meeting you can be sure more than half the men will be clad in one. But this is its chief weakness; how can you stand out when 90% of your body looks exactly the same as over 50% of the room. We tend to forget that our clothing sends off strong signals, and if you want to be anything but average you want to present yourself as such, not always try to blend in. In addition, those with a very light complexion best value suits need to pair navy blue with rich colored shirts; a white or ice blue shirt will drain the color right from their face. Finally, young men are advised to avoid this color as that it has a habit of accentuating youth.

Black

A more difficult color to wear, it is perceived by many as the choice for funerals and weddings. No argument there; however, it is so much more for the man with the right complexion. No other color has such a slimming effect, and depending on the dress shirt it can go from regular office wear to drinks with friends at the hippest clubs in Asia. The key to wearing black is being a high contrast individual (which as most Asians are) is a man with dark hair with light to medium colored skin. The effect is a properly framed face to where all the attention is drawn.

Charcoal Gray

Charcoal gray suits projects an image of authority, stability, and professionalism. It is an excellent choice for a first suit, especially for young men as that it does accentuate youth (unlike Navy Blue). Although clearly lighter than black or navy blue when placed side by side, it nonetheless is just as charcoal pinstripe suit acceptable at all business functions and interview situations. Possibly the most versatile color, it looks good with almost any colored shirt imaginable.

Brown

Brown ranges from a light through a deep chocolate hue. Many men look their best in earth-tones, making the brown suit an important part of their wardrobe; it is also a popular color for causal options including tweed suits and sports jackets. One caveat: until the early 1980s, brown was not considered a color for business (we can thank Ronald Reagan for their return). While the times have changed there are still some members of the old guard who continue to hold to the old rule that brown does not belong in town. This should not dissuade the well-dressed gentleman from wearing brown with confidence, but it is important to be aware.

Tan

The navy suit for warm weather, tan is an excellent choice. Less flashy than white, it none the less commands attention and can set you apart from the crowd while keeping you cool. If you live in a cold weather city, a tan suit is ideal for spring and summer while in a warmer climate it is appropriate year round. The tan suit pairs well with white, light blue, or any pale pastel shirt. Best of all, this gives you the chance to really make your dark ties stand out.

Taupe

A color that falls between gray and brown, taupe is a great choice for the man who has a couple of the basic colored suits in his wardrobe and is looking for a color out of the ordinary that still maintains a professional appearance. Great for use year round, the taupe suit is a little less dressy than a charcoal suit but more likely to draw compliments because of it’s ability to compliment a man’s finer features.

Light Grey

A great spring and summer color that doesn’t draw attention to the wearer but instead signals a suave persona confident in his own skin, light grey is an excellent choice for any complexion. Live in a warmer climate? Then light grey is appropriate year round. The light grey suit pairs well with white, light blue, and almost any pale colored shirt, although if you are light complected you may want to go with a bolder hue.

White

The classic color of summer. You don’t have to be Tom Wolfe charcoal grey suit to stay cool and look fmzds110706 great. White compliments all but the lightest complexions, and even then the right shirt choice can remedy that situation. The key to wearing a white suit is confidence, especially in Hong Kong where a suit in this color is hard to come by.

Suit $12.78 Nelly’s decision to release his Sweatsuit project as two respective albums, Sweat and Suit — the former clubby and insincere, the latter refined and mannered — is somewhat of a mixed blessing. On the one hand, it’s nice to pick whichever side of Nelly’s persona you prefer, whether in general or at any particular moment; on the other hand, the separate-album concept makes for two very one-dimensional albums that begin to sound formulaic by their respective conclusions. The thing is, Nelly has plenty of great songs here on these two albums. Quality certainly isn’t an issue — he works with a who’s who of pop-rap circa 2004, from the Neptunes to Christina Aguilera to Snoop Dogg to Missy Elliott, and ends up with a wealth of certified and could-be hits. Yet by sorting them into two different categories and then lumping them together onto two separate CDs, the diversity at hand is nullified. Granted, this two-styles, two-discs approach worked well for OutKast on Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (and less well, but well nonetheless, for R. Kelly on Happy People/U Saved Me), but it doesn’t work so well for Nelly. His Sweatsuit recordings are diverse, for sure, but OutKast he isn’t, nor is he the Pied Piper. Rather, Nelly is essentially a pop star who happens to rap, and as such, he specializes in calculated pop formulas — namely clubby, cocky party songs (previously “Hot in Herre,” presently “Flap Your Wings”) and sweet, sultry love songs (previously “Dilemma,” presently “My Place”). And by sorting those two formulas into respective albums, the calculation becomes overt and comes across as formulaic to discerning listeners. The key, then, is to not be a discerning listener: it’s best to just let these songs play and take them for what they are — well-done popcraft.The Suit disc is by far the more interesting disc of the two. There are only 11 songs here, but thankfully they’re relatively diverse compared to those of Sweat. All except three of them are collabos, and often the collaborators steal the show, reducing Nelly to guest status on his own album. “Play It Off,” a tiptop-shelf Neptunes joint boasting a great Pharrell vocal contribution, kicks off the album marvelously, and the next two tracks — “Pretty Toes” and “My Place” — are top draws also. The former is a fun Jazze Pha song toasting fly girls, and the latter is a “Dilemma” retread — where that song had aped Patti LaBelle’s “Love, Need and Want You” for its hook (to much success), this one apes yet another Philly soul classic, Teddy Pendergrass’ bedroom ballad “Come Go With Me” (again, to much success). Another highlight is “She Don’t Know My Name,” a Speakerboxxx-like Big Boi (of OutKast) production where Ron Isley and Snoop Dogg steal the show, leaving Nelly only a 45-second verse for himself. Rose is easily one of the Free-Folk movement’s busiest exponents, splitting his time between running the Digitalis and Foxglove labels, the Foxy Digitalis webzine and writing his own music under a variety of different monikers with a host of collaborators. Somehow, he has found the time to craft Exquisite Idols, which elegantly follows a hugely acclaimed collaboration with ’s Rameses III, Night of the Ankou. However, whereas Night of the Ankou explored both acts’ occasional leanings towards ambience and drone, Exquisite Idols shows Rose digging deep into the dusty vaults of his American heritage and drumming up an album dripping with Blues, Folk and free experimentation. This is Folk music as played from a snow-drift in Tulsa, in a Midwest wasteland or a forgotten forest drenched in moonlight. It is personal, secluded and almost lonely, but Rose never allows the melancholy to take over. Exquisite Idols is an album steeped in tradition, yet its greatness comes from Rose’s ability to absorb other cultures so easily: there are traces of Indian traditional music, Greek music and more, all hidden within the cacophony of banjo, guitar and clanging percussion. The Exquisite Death of Saxon Shore $11.03 There’s no question that the story behind The Exquisite Death of Saxon Shore is a fine example of artistic persistence — Saxon Shore founder Matt Doty had to deal with the departure of his earlier bandmates, recruiting and working with a slew of new performers using the Net to trade files for rehearsals and demos and then finally squeezing in a time-constrained recording session with producer/supporter Dave Fridmann, not to mention collaborating with cover designer Ben Volta throughout. Is the album as good as its back story, though? Yes, but only to an extent — Saxon Shore are clearly aiming for a Big Epic Rock sound in the way that Fridmann is unquestionably great at overseeing, yet Exquisite Death for that reason is a very unsurprising album, where the majesty is welcomed for its familiarity more than for its newness. Starting with the massive-sounding “The Revolution Will Be Streaming,” all ascending guitar lines and huge drums, Exquisite Death captures moods both of universe-filling sonics and gentle, meditative reflections. The rich melodic flow of “This Shameless Moment” and “The Shaping of a Helpless Joy” and the dramatic descending piano at the heart of “Silence Lends a Face to the Soul” all show that they have their approach down to a T. To say that the album owes a large debt to acts like the Flaming Lips, M83, and Mogwai (the latter two especially since Saxon Shore is an instrumental-only band) is clear enough, but within those parameters the group achieves some strikingly beautiful moments, while Steve Roessner’s drum work in particular is often the killer touch on many songs (his rolling fills on “With a Red Suit You Will Become a Man” being one standout of many). Saxon Shore have yet to make the best mark they can, but Exquisite Death is still well worth a listen. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi

Accompanied only by six-string classical guitar and/or the Portuguese 12-string guitarra, these four women offer an excellent introduction to the fado tradition.
