Metal and Embroidery

Embroidery is an art. And like any other art, it allows for innovation and experimentation as much as you want. There are endless possibilities when it comes to embroidery designs and embroidery styles. By just using different colors and patterns, one can come out with something new and beautiful every now and again.  While playing around with colors and fabrics there always a chance you could come out with something absolutely delightful.

One strange yet interesting innovation in your embroidery can be the use of metal. Embroidered metal discs may sound strange but when you actually work on them they can turn out to be a really piece of work that can be used for many purposes. Simple perforated beading discs can be used for this purpose. Use the holes in the disc to embroider around them, the holes act as a guide and a frame for the design. The resulting discs are really cute and can be used in a number of crafts.

You can use as many colors as you want and weave a variety of designs in the discs. You can either use wool, pearl cotton thread or simply the stranded floss thread. But normally the stranded floss thread is not a preferred choice as it may split and get a bit messy. Take care that before you start stitching, leave a few inches of thread from the back so as to make a loop. Following the holes you can make different patterns with different colors. There is no limit to the designs and patterns you can create. Like a kaleidoscope you can turn up with different amazing patterns every time you embroider. When you are done tie the ends of the thread into a double knot.

The only one thing that can possibly be a little bothersome is that for some reason the holes in the outer most loops on the disc are not as symmetric as in the rest of the disc. But due to the flexibility of the designs this is not a major problem. You can then use the colorfully embroidered discs to various purposes. You can either attach two discs back to back to create a pendant like structure. This can be used as a stylish pendant, as an accessory on a bag or denim jackets, as buttons on knitted sweaters, as runner for a zipper or any other purpose you can think of. If you are a bit adventurous, they can be used as earrings or charms on bracelets. They are light weight and easy to use.

You can use the outermost row of holes to stitch it to the fabric. You can adorn the fabric with other machine embroidery designs.  Just match your thread color to the embroidery, and your stitches will be invisible. These metal discs are super inexpensive, and come in different sizes. Happy Stitching!

Evening Of Themagican $25.48 Randy Burns’ second album, 1968’s Evening of the Magician, is an enormous improvement over his 1967 debut, Of Love and War. That album, while fine for what it was, included too many covers of songs by Burns’ contemporaries in the Greenwich Village folk scene to show what the singer/songwriter was capable of. This album, which features 10 good to great Burns originals, is far superior and much more personal feeling. Burns’ new backing trio, the Sky Dog Band, provide sympathetic and low-key backing on keyboards (Mat Kastner), bass and flute (Bruce Samuels) and percussion (John O’Leary). The acid folk settings are similar to those of Burns’ ESP-Disk labelmates Pearls Before Swine, but his solid, simple songs lack Tom Rapp’s psychedelic flightiness. (This is either a good or bad thing depending on one’s point of view.)Burns’ three originals on Of Love and War hinted that the Connecticut native might be a gifted songwriter, and the best songs of Evening of the Magician more than fulfill that promise. Burns’ forte is the evocative love song, and Evening of the Magician contains several, with “Echoes of Mary’s Song,” “Susan, Your Mind’s Got Wings” (featuring some odd, seemingly random organ interjections by Kastner) and the heartbreaking “Girl From England” particularly lovely standouts. The brooding “Ron’s Song” and “Rainy Day Children” are nearly up to those standouts, but “You’ve Got All of Love Standing At Your Door” is marred by a bizarrely stentorian, Anthony Newley-like chorus. Other than that misstep, however, Evening of the Magician is an excellent piece of gentle, lightly psychedelic folk-rock, and an album well worth rediscovery by fans of Pearls Before Swine, late-period Phil Ochs or other acid folk artists. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi

Evening Tapestry $8.78 It took Brown Recluse a long time to follow up their 2009 Soft Skin EP with an album, especially considering that the songs for the EP were recorded in 2007 and Evening Tapestry was released four long years later. The extra time was worth it though, because you’re unlikely to find a better-constructed, more concise example of orchestrated pop in 2011. Both the sound and the songs are first-rate and they work together to place the band proudly in the long-running orch pop tradition they are so obviously influenced by. On Evening Tapestry you can feel echoes of the Left Banke, the Beach Boys, the Rain Parade, and the Ladybug Transistor in the precise way Brown Recluse surround their achingly pretty melodies with layers of sound and in the unexpected choices of instrumental backing. While most of the songs are built around gently layered acoustic and electric guitars, there are all sorts of vintage keyboards, horns, and percussion popping in and out to add texture to the mix. Add to this lyricist Timothy Meskers’ unique perspective and the poetic slant of his words; he’s not happy to just dole out typical moon-June love songs but instead providing snapshots of city life, dead-of-night inner dialogue, and the occasional off-kilter love song. He sings the words in a tender, intimate voice that carries the melodies with an easy grace, sounding both confessional and utterly confused by the emotion hidden in the opacity of the lyrics. All the pieces fit together perfectly for Brown Recluse on Evening Tapestry, and it’s a pleasure from beginning to end. While the lyrics may be challenging to absorb at times, it’s a challenge you’ll want to undertake, seeing as how the most difficult words are wrapped in the most beautiful sounds and melodies. Fans of the Left Banke, the Rain Parade, and the Ladybug Transistor should embrace Brown Recluse and clutch Evening Tapestry close to their arrangement-loving hearts. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
