They sat, unseen — except for some wholly unauthorized re-editings of four of the shows into feature-length television films — until 40 years later, and Something Weird has now brought them out. The Veil might well have been a success, had it aired as planned: Television was filled in those days with anthology shows, and the public had developed a fixation on the paranormal, heralded by the best-seller The Search for Bridey Murphy (which spawned at least two film imitators, The She Creature and The Undead), which told of a woman’s supposed regression into a past life through hypnosis. Even Girl on the Road, a seemingly predictable ghost story, has several nice directorial touches. One of the treats for fans of Karloff is watching him essay a series of varying roles, including a comically bumbling British police sergeant, an aging man in a wheelchair hiding a terrible secret, and a psychiatrist at New York’s Bellevue Hospital. Most of the stories deal with premonitions, messages from beyond the grave, and other examples of psychic phenomenon. Summer Heat, one of the better episodes, involving a tormented man (Harry Bartell, in a great performance) who witnesses a murder that, as he comes to realize, hasn’t happened yet, owes a bit to Cornell Woolrich’s book The Night Has a Thousand Eyes and the feature film (starring Edward G. Robinson) made from it, but its opening sequence of this show also borrows a bit from Elmer Rice’s Street Scene. Paul Bryer, a working character actor (who also turned up in The Time Element pilot for The Twilight Zone), is also good as the tough detective working the case. Strangely enough, the most interesting episode of all is Jack the Ripper, which was not shot as part of The Veil but done for some British anthology series of the mid-’50s and licensed by the producers. Seven Veils of Silence $18.38 Call it breakcore, or IDM, or techno-industrial, or anything else, this album by Rachel Kozak is utterly unnerving in a way few consciously unnerving records can be. Most records attempting to tell a story like “Salome removed her almond eyes from their sockets and placed them in the sand, irises up,” have little chance of matching the black magic tone with their stereotypical minor chords and clanging percussion, and worst of all, Count Chocula vocals. Seven Veils of Silence does in fact have clanging metallic percussion. And the warped sound effect, if they in fact have a chord structure, would probably be minor. But the real chill comes in the dislocated Arabian voice that creeps in and out of the record, dancing to the whirling dervish of “Desecration of the Baptist,” with it’s pseudo middle eastern melodies, recalling that if the devil possibly lives anywhere on earth, it is in the sands where man first came from. Kozak makes her own voice heard on “Succumb Unto the Rapture,” where she moans wickedly like a less sexual and more violent Kim Gordon and her tonal poetry on early Sonic Youth records. Snares dance like snakes, hyper fast breaks and DSP drills hold you down while the creatures bear in. Grieg: Peer Gynt; Norwegian Dances; Bridal Procession $7.17 Nearly all of RCA’s releases in its Red Seal Classic Library series have been reissues. That’s fine: RCA has many superlative recordings in its vaults, and reissuing them is the appropriate means to keep them in circulation. But this particular disc of Grieg’s orchestral music performed by the Royal Philharmonic under the direction of Yuri Temirkanov has never been released before and is thus new to circulation. When it was recorded is anybody’s guess — the notes fail to mention recording dates — but the evidence suggest the early ’90s, the same period in which Temirkanov recorded the Tchaikovsky with the same ensemble for the same label. Why these recordings were not released at the time is harder to guess: at the time, not only was Temirkanov’s star rising, but the whole classical recording industry was experiencing an enormous increase in business. More to the point, however, these are tremendous performances: strong, sensitive, soulful, and masterful. At the time, Temirkanov was clearly one of the best of the younger generation of Russian conductors with a powerful but flexible beat, a muscular but supple balance, and complete control over every aspect of orchestral music making. The Royal Philharmonic plays like the most brilliantly colorful and heroically muscular orchestra in England and it follows its Russian-born conductor like the Light Brigade at Balaclava. But beyond even the performances, it is the order of the music that makes this disc so noteworthy. In his selection of music from Peer Gynt, Temirkanov shapes a musically and dramatically satisfying whole, something that very, very few other arrangements have ever done.
